Italian scientists have proven that re-infection with coronavirus after recovery happens relatively rarely, and immunity against SARS-COV-2 is preserved over time. Briefly about a study published in Jama Internal Medicine magazine, a press release on MedicalXpress.
Experts analyzed medical records more than 15 thousand people and revealed 1579 positive results on SARS-COV-2. A year after that, 3.9 percent of the initially healthy people were infected with coronavirus, and only 0.31 percent (five people), who were overcome COVID-19, suffered a second attack of the disease. The re-infection was determined as the emergence of a new infection at least 90 days after the complete disappearance of the marks of the virus from the initial infection.
Scientists note that four of the five re-infected either worked in the hospital, or visited them, which is associated with a high risk of coronavirus infection. And only one of five people had enough severe symptoms to be hospitalized. The average time from the initial infection to re-infection was 230 days.
Researchers stressed that all this does not mean that previously infected should miss the vaccination from COVID-19, because it is not known how the body will respond to new variants of coronaivirus.
