UN Secretary-General Anthony Guterrysh during a speech at the International Financial Forum in Beijing called on world leaders to abandon investments in the coal industry, reports Bloomberg.
According to him, funds should be invest in renewable energy sources, which will lead to a gradual failure to use coal. Guterrish reminded that South Korea committed itself to stop financing coal stations abroad, and expressed the hope that G7 countries and other leaders follow this example.
Last week, at a meeting of the Ministers of Ecology, Climate and Environment, “Big Seven” countries declared their readiness to stop using coal in accordance with the tasks that are specified in the 2015 Paris Agreement.
However, in the communiqué, at the end of the meeting, the decision was less strict. Under restrictions, only government investments in coal projects have been hit.
As noted in the material, the forecasts for this year show that the consumption of coal among the three largest consumers will only grow. Thus, American power plants will show an increase of 16 percent, and China, despite promises in the future, reduce use, intends to burn a record number of this fuel.
Earlier, the International Energy Agency (MEA) warned that this year carbon dioxide emissions would grow almost five percent, which will become the second largest growth in history. The main growth factor will increase the consumption of coal.
