The Allbalorussian People’s Assembly (VNS) after changes to the Constitution will be able to announce an impeachment to the President of the country in the event of a state treason or another grave crime. It is reported by BelTA with reference to Chairman of the Constitutional Commission of Peter Miklashevich.
According to him, at present, only the Parliament of Belarus is endowed with the authority to retire the head of the state. In the case of approval of the amendments to the basic law, the president will require the voices of half the delegates of the VNS, and for removing from office – two thirds.
“[This] will contribute to the further strengthening of the democratic states, the development of the national representation, the implementation of the constitutional principle of democracy,” said Micklyshevich.
Previously, the President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko said that he noticed in the “Request for Change” in society. At the same time, he stated that the decisions of the last congress of the VNS “confirmed the support of the State Course” and most Belarusians agreed with them.
Amendments to the Constitution of Belarus were announced by Lukashenko after the start of mass protests that engulfed the country due to the expected falsifications in the presidential election. The VI Congress of VNS took place in Minsk in mid-February, but all his proposals have gained a recommendatory nature and did not receive development in draft laws. Representatives of the Belarusian opposition to the congress were not allowed.
