Dozens of people became victims of volcanic eruption in Africa

Dozens of people became victims of the eruption of the Nyraonggo volcano in the east of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) in Africa. This is reported by Xinhua agency with reference to local sources.

The Government of the province of Northern Kivu in the north-east of the country announced that the number of victims as a result of the catastrophe reached 32 people. The head of regional civil defense department, Joseph Makundi clarified that nine people burned alive, and five died from inhalation of smoke or toxic gas, the agency reports. It is noted that the number of victims may be more than confirmed at the moment.

The eruption of Niragongo began on the evening of May 22. The volcano is located near the city of Goma, the population of which is about 1.5 million people. It was reported that local residents began to panic, seeing the eruption. They took things on hand and left their homes to get to the border with Rwanda.

In 2017, Niiragono recognized as one of the five most dangerous volcanoes on Earth. According to experts, about 280 thousand people died due to volcanoes since 1600.
