Storms in the UK allowed the country to put a record for the development of “clean” energy. A strong wind in the morning of May 21 stored with electricity more than half of the United Kingdom, writes The Guardian.
The country’s wind power supply turbines for several hours developed about 62.5 percent of all electricity in Great Britain. The previous record of 59.9 percent was in August 2020 after Hurricanes “Ellen” and “Francis”.
In May, the wind gave British 18 percent of all electricity, a year earlier this figure was slightly higher – 20 percent. According to the English Electric Power and Gas Company National Grid, 2020 has become the most environmentally friendly for national energy. The level of carbon dioxide emissions per unit generation unit reached a historic minimum.
Independent climatic analytical center Ember stated that in 2020 renewable electricity in the UK for the first time ahead of fossil fuel production. The organization noted that the use of wind, sunlight, water and wood as alternative energy sources gave the UK 42 percent of electricity, while gas and coal power plants developed 41 percent of the total volume.
Replacing traditional energy sources with alternative stations has become a popular trend in recent years due to enhanced combating climate change. The transition strategy to “clean” technologies is dictated by the Paris Agreement on the zero carbon footer. Nevertheless, the Specialists of the Potsdam Institute of Climate Change consider global warming almost inevitable. Of the 400 scientists analyzed by scientists, only 50 will avoid temperature growth above 1.5 degrees Celsius.
