Russian ambassador to Copenhagen Vladimir Barbin responded sharply on the initiative to expand the presence of the US military in Greenland. It is reported by Berlingske.
“in the Arctic there is no place for NATO and its arms,” the diplomat said. He noted that the strengthening of the American presence in Greenland will mean Copenhagen’s refusal from responsibility for maintaining the “low voltage zone” in the region.
Edition also leads to a more detailed criticism by the representative of Russia for NATO countries in the region. The ambassador stated that the accusations of Russia in the militarization of the Arctic are bothering, since all the development of the military sphere goes within the state borders of the Russian Federation – the Russian state did not claim and not going to claim all the Arctic.
At the same time, the placement near the northern borders of Russia of foreign armed forces, which can cause a blow to Russian objects, can hardly be called a step in stability in the Arctic region, the diplomat stressed.
Earlier on the same day at the meeting of the Arctic Council in Reyavik, American Secretary of State Anthony Blinken said that the United States and Canada support the status of the Arctic as a region of peaceful cooperation. The day before, he accused Russia in “illegal claims” in the region.
