Chubais estimated possible losses of Russia from hydrocarbon tax of EU

Special Representative of the President of Russia for Relations with International Organizations Anatoly Chubais estimated possible losses of the country from the introduction of a transboundary hydrocarbon tax. He believes that the Russian economy at the first stage can lose four to six billion dollars. This is reported by the newspaper “Vedomosti”.

“The consequences for Russia from the sale of all that is laid in the European Green Deal, larger and more than 4-6 billion dollars a year,” Chubais said and added that the damage could be serious and not limited to tax payments.

According to him, the transboundary hydrocarbon tax of the EU can be introduced from January 1, 2023. The dialogue on the regulation of this issue is already underway, however, before the introduction of mandatory payments, you need to move to the subject negotiations. Chubais noted that the Russian side has a “set of proposals” to protect their interests.

At the end of 2019, the European Union announced the “European Green Course” (EU GREEN DEAL). Its purpose is to make the economy climate neutral by 2050. For this it is planned to introduce carbon import tax to EU countries. At the same time, the Russian authorities declared that we saw in the planned regulation violation of the provisions of the World Trade Organization and ready to challenge transboundary carbon regulation.

Earlier, Chubais called the most important, complex and difficult goal for the development of Russia. According to him, we are talking about combating climate change. Chubais believes that it is necessary to actively develop hydrogen energy, but this task is comparable to the industrialization in the past.
