Russia appreciated chances of preserving contract on open sky

The chances of maintaining a contract on the open sky (Don) are minimal. They were appreciated by the deputy head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russia Sergey Ryabkov, writes TASS.

“Americans and their allies missed a lot of time to solve this issue without a fuss of unnecessary and extraordinary,” the diplomat believes.

He added that Washington and his allies still think about revising the position of the Don. At the same time, it is unlikely to use the American side.

Earlier on May 19, the State Duma unanimously voted for the denunciation of the contract on the open sky. After the lower chamber, the bill should consider the Federation Council: At this time, the US will still be able to “return” the agreement.

The bill was developed in response to the US output from the Treaty in November 2020. In an explanatory note, it is noted that Washington’s decision “made a threat to the safety of Russia.” At the same time, the American side argues that it was out of agreement due to violations by Moscow.

An open access agreement concluded in 1992. The agreement allows participating countries to carry out intelligence flights over each other’s territory to follow the military activities and compliance with existing arms control treaties.
