Russia: recorded largest magnetic storm since 2019

Scientists recorded the largest planetary magnetic storm from 2019. It occurred on Wednesday, on May 12, reported on the website of the X-ray Astronomy Laboratory.

According to Russian scientists, the level of geomagnetic perturbations at the maximum of storms reached KP = 7 by a nine-ball scale. Her peak fell for the period between 15:00 and 21:00 Moscow time. “According to the accepted international systematization, the storms of this level are able to significantly affect the energy systems, requiring voltage correction, significantly increase the demolition of spacecraft with orbits, cause problems of orientation, interruptions in satellite navigation, problems of low-frequency radio navigation and interruption of Radiocommunication,” experts told.

At the same time, the storm did not bring any noticeable consequences: geomagnetic perturbations were relatively short-term and occurred on a very calm magnetic background. Thus, it can be concluded that the Earth experienced one very short and strong cospace.

“Solar flares, registered these days, occurred in the sections of the Sun, noticeably remote from the direction to the ground. The storm was absent in the forecast. It probably took place a rare combination of several factors, but what exactly it consisted, while he was a mystery,” – Added scientists.

Currently, the geomagnetic environment has stabilized, the feller activity of the Sun is low.

At the end of January, the head of the physics department and the evolution of the stars of the Institute of Astronomy of the Russian Academy of Sciences Dmitry Vibe reported that magnetic storms do not significantly affect the well-being of people. According to him, during the storms, the likelihood of “some heart excesses, but it is lost against the background of a variety of stresses, with whom a person meets in his life.”
