Leakage of radioactive waste of Second World War occurred in US

The leakage of radioactive waste from the underground reservoir Times of World War II occurred in the US state of Washington. This was stated by the US Department of Energy, reports Associated Press.

It is assumed that water is leaving the water from the B-109 reservoir in the Hamford reservation, infected with waste produced by plutonium for nuclear weapons. The representative of the Ministry of Jeff Tyrei noted that there is no increased risk for health and security of the population due to what happened. “Pollution in this area is not new, and measures to mitigate its effects are accepted for decades,” he emphasized.

The State Department of Ecology said that 13 liters of polluted water flow out of the reservoir per day. The representative of the department added that the incident proves the “critical need for resources to eliminate the aging objects of Hanford”, which will eventually pose with time.

B-109 reservoir is designed for 465 thousand liters, but previously most of the fluid has been thrown out of it, so there is a small amount of waste at the moment. It is believed that leakage began back in 2019. There are 149 such objects on the territory of the landfill, many of which are considered may be damaged. The tanks were built during the Manhattan project.

in Hanford produced most of the Plution for the US nuclear arsenal. There was also a bomb discouraged in 1945 to the Japanese city of Nagasaki. Currently, the Hanford polygon is the most dangerous in the country.

“Project Manhattan” – the code name of the US program to develop nuclear weapons, the implementation of which began on August 13, 1942.
