At least eight people died in a major fire, which occurred in one of the hostels on Merkel Street in the center of Riga. It is reported by the LSM portal with reference to the State Fire and Rescue Service of Latvia.
According to the ministry, a fire message in the old six-story building, where several apartments were located and a budget hotel, the firefighters received around 5:00 local time (coincided with Moscow). Soon the fire spread to the roof. Previously, the fireplace is located in a hostel, where foreign students lived.
Rescuers managed to evacuate 24 people, six of them were transferred to doctors in medium-hard condition due to burns and carbon monoxide poisoning. The final number of dead is not yet called, people can still remain. It is noted that the fire could not be eliminated until now, in the building there was an iron door with a code-key, which initially made it difficult to work the rescuers.
Earlier, the Russian from the village of Znamenka in Bashkiria decided to warm up with the help of a fire in the kitchen and accidentally burned the apartment. Nobody suffered, people managed to escape thanks to fire detectors. The apartment did not have electricity, gas and heating.
