Pomegranate juice is beneficial for brain

American scientists have found that the use of pomegranate juice by pregnant women can protect their fetus from brain injury during intrauterine development. This is reported in an article published in Scientific Reports. The research is summarized in a press release on MedicalXpress.

Retardation of intrauterine development of the fetus (IUGR) is a common disease that occurs due to a lack of supply of nutrients and oxygen to the newborn’s body due to defects in the placenta. About one in every ten babies is diagnosed with IUGR, which increases the risk of death and neurodevelopmental disorders.

The study involved 99 pregnant women who were divided into several groups depending on the level of consumption of pomegranate juice. MRI findings have shown evidence that daily consumption of a polyphenol-rich beverage can reduce the risk of brain injury in infants with IUGR, especially in the third trimester, when the infant’s central nervous system can be particularly vulnerable.

Polyphenols are antioxidants found in certain foods and drinks, including almonds, berries, red wine, and tea. These substances are known to cross the blood-brain barrier, and animal studies have shown a protective effect against neurodegenerative diseases.
