It was the West that accelerated the process of starting the regulation of Internet spaces. Such accusations were made by the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry Maria Zakharova, reports TASS.
“They themselves accelerated what we did not dare to do for a long time. We all the time felt awkward that it was time to introduce regulatory measures and it was time to start regulating the Internet space. With regard to American Internet monopolies,” she said Zakharova.
These Internet monopolies, to which the Foreign Ministry spokesman ranks Washington, NATO, Brussels, according to her, act solely out of their own interests and do not want to compete fairly, thereby “demonstrating immoral behavior on the Internet.” Russia’s actions are not a violation of “certain principles,” since they “have long been violated by the collective West,” Zakharova said.
On March 10, Roskomnadzor slowed down Twitter in Russia. The department explained that it took such measures due to the fact that the moderators of the social network do not fully remove the content prohibited in Russia.
Soon after the restriction of access, Twitter representatives reacted to the actions of the Russian authorities. The company noted that it advocates for an “open internet around the world,” and said it was deeply concerned about “increasing efforts to block and restrict public dialogue online.”
