The family of George Floyd, a black American strangled by a police officer, has settled a lawsuit against Minneapolis. Reported by The New York Times.
The City Council unanimously voted for the pre-trial settlement of the issue and the payment of $ 27 million to the relatives of the murdered. According to the newspaper, this amount will be one of the largest in such cases.
The Floyd family filed a lawsuit against the Minneapolis authorities in July 2020. The plaintiffs argued that the police violated the rights of the deceased, and also failed to properly train their employees and dismiss the violators of the law.
At the end of May 2020, protests for the rights of blacks began in the United States under the slogan Black Lives Matter (“Black lives are important”). The reason was a number of high-profile deaths, including the African American George Floyd, who died as a result of a brutal arrest: the man was strangled at the time of the arrest by the police. Soon, the actions of the police became the cause of mass pogroms throughout the country. Protesters reported unfair treatment of blacks.
