The new version of the PlayStation 5 will not be released until 2023. This is reported by the Chinese edition of MyDrivers, citing its own sources.
An insider aware of the company’s plans said that Sony intends to release a simplified version of the next-generation set-top box in the future. The console will be called the PlayStation 5 Slim and will differ in size compared to the original, probably with reduced performance and a more affordable price.
Judging by the disclosed data, the production of the PS5 Slim will start in 2023. By this time, the corporation plans to prepare for the set-top box a chip produced by a five-nanometer process technology, which Sony will supply to TSMC. According to rumors, Sony and the Taiwanese semiconductor manufacturer have already signed a cooperation agreement. However, the console release dates may be shifted.
Sources emphasized that one of the main features of the new device will be reduced dimensions. This is due to the fact that many PlayStation 5 owners complain about the large size of the console, which causes problems with its location in the apartment.
Sony has released various versions of its flagship game consoles in the past. For example, in 2016 – three years after the release of the PS4 – the company introduced the PlayStation 4 Slim and 4 Pro. In 2009, the corporation announced the PlayStation 3 Slim, also three years after the release of the PS3.
At the end of February, insiders announced that the Japanese corporation is going to re-release the legendary PlayStation Portable. PSP will support 5G networks and is focused on cloud gaming. The new device can compete with the popular Nintendo Switch console on the portable console market.
