Matthew Miller, Fedora Project Leader, spoke with the initiative to split the community name and Fedora distribution. The name Fedora is proposed for the entire project and associated community, and the distribution is planned to be called Fedora Linux.
As the reason for the renaming, it is mentioned that the Fedora project is not limited to one distribution and is also developing the EPEL repository for RHEL / CentOS, documentation, websites and various tools. Therefore, when I say Fedora, I would like to refer to the entire project, and not one of the products it creates.
Change of name suggested produce in Fedora 35 release by replacing ‘NAME = Fedora’ with ‘NAME = “Fedora Linux”‘ in / etc / os-release. The “ID = fedora” parameter will remain unchanged, ie. no need to modify scripts and conditional blocks in spec files. Specialized editions will also continue to ship under the old names such as Fedora Workstation, Fedora CoreOS, and Fedora KDE Plasma Desktop.
The idea of specifying Fedora GNU + Linux instead of Fedora Linux has not received support, as unnecessary words make it difficult to understand and, although the components of the GNU project are an important link in Fedora Linux, the distribution is not limited to them and also includes many other packages. In addition, the use of the word “Linux” for distributions has already taken root and has become a generally accepted term.
