53 years ago, March 27, 1968, at 10:18 near the village of Novoselovo Kirzhachsky district of the Vladimir region during the training flight for MiG-15 UTI killed first cosmonaut Planet Yuri Gagarin and military pilot Vladimir Seregin. At that time, Gagarin was 34 years old, and Sergei is 45 years old.
Yuri Gagarin and Vladimir Sergey took off from the Chkalovsky airfield near Moscow. At the time of takeoff, the conditions of visibility were normal – the lower edge of the clouds was 900 m above the earth. The task in the pilot area should have taken at least 20 minutes, but after four minutes (at 10:30), Gagarin reported the end of the task, requesting the permission to turn around and fly to the base. After that, the connection with the aircraft was interrupted.
When it became clear that the aircraft had to end fuel, the search began in the flight zone, which continued for more than 3 hours. At 14:50, one of the helicopters managed to detect the fragments of the MiG-15Whi aircraft by about 65 km from the airfield, in the village of Novosyloovo, 18 km from Kirzhach Vladimir Region. In the morning of the next day, Gagarin’s shoes with talons for food were found. Later a wallet was discovered with driver’s license and a photo of Korolev. On March 28, the remains of the remains of Yuri Gagarin and Vladimir Seregin, and the urns with the ashes of the dead were buried in the necropolis at the Kremlin Wall.

March 27, 1968 was the tragedy not only for native and close to Yuri Gagarin, his friends, colleagues, people involved in astronautics, but also a personal grief for any family in the USSR. A national mourning was announced in the country, for the first time in history in connection with the departure of a person who is not the head of state.
On the spot of the death of Yuri Gagarin and Vladimir Sergeina on the edge of a funnel, filled with melt water, first a large memorable stone was installed, and then a All-Union Competition for the Memorial Project was held. The best project of a group of sculptors and architects, led by Professor Nikolai Nikolayevich Ullas, was also recognized, and the sculptor M.M. Bolovitinov and the former chief architect of the region A.P.Akimov worked.
Opening of the monument in the village of Novoselovo took place on August 6, 1976. The memorial was created by architects from the red granite, the basis of the composition of the Memorial is an obelisk of 16 meters high. The foundation of the obelisk is made of the dark with the tears of Labradorite. All Obelisk resembles a flame that breaks out of the depths of the black funnel.
