Italy declared threat of NATO by Russia because of a spy scandal

Alleged espionage and buying secret data by employees of the Russian diplomatic representation threatens the security of Italy and the entire North Atlantic Alliance. This was stated by the head of the Italian Foreign Ministry of Luigi Di Mayo, RIA Novosti reports.

“It happened today is unacceptable and entailing the consequences, there is no doubt about this. It is unacceptable that the employees of our Navy pay for NATO information. This puts at risk not only our security, but also all the alliance,” the agency leads his words.

Britain, as an ally of Italy on NATO, was supported. According to Reuters, the Minister of Foreign Affairs Dominic Raab caught Russia in “hostile and destabilizing activities” and also promised to take measures against it.

Di Mayo earlier stated that two employees of Russian diplomsses would send out of the country. The Italian authorities argue that the Navy officer and the Russian Embassy officer in Rome were detained in the Italian capital on espionage charges. On March 30, the captain of the Italian fleet allegedly conveyed to Russian military secret documents in exchange for 5 thousand euros.

The names of the suspects are not disclosed. The investigation assumes that the Italian officer could take espionage in favor of Russia due to financial difficulties in the family.
