USA and China, the sources of the largest carbon emissions, agreed on cooperation in the urgent containment of climate change. This is reported by CBS News with reference to an official statement.
Agreement was achieved by a special US representative for John Kerry’s climate and his Chinese colleague Chenghua during two-day negotiations in Shanghai. Kerry noted that they discussed how to speed up the global energy transition. “I never shied away from the expression of our point of view, shared by many, about the need to reduce coal everywhere,” he said.
China is the largest consumer of coal in the world, followed by the United States. Excessive consumption leads to carbon emissions that strongly heat the planet, which contributes to climate change.
US President Joe Bayden previously promised to radically reduce emissions into the atmosphere for 30 years. Also, the United States officially returned to the Paris climate agreement.
On March 26, Biden invited Russian President Vladimir Putin to the climate negotiations, which were scheduled for April 22-23. In the Kremlin, April 19 reported that the Russian leader would take part in the online summit.
