University of Bayreuth in Germany found out that plasticizers contained in many household subjects may violate the important functions of the human brain. The article of the researchers was published in Communications Biology magazine.
In the course of experiments, experts found that even small amounts of plasticizer of bisphenol A and bisphenol s violate the transmission of signals between nerve cells in the brain of fish. According to the authors of scientific work, a similar effect may also be provided on the human nervous system, so it is necessary to develop plasticizers who do not make harm to the body.
Part of the brain neurons transmit signals that start the excitation state in the underlying cells, other brain cells perform braking function. Coordination of excitation and braking is important for a healthy central nervous system, but plasticizers break the balance. Damage does not show itself immediately, but after a month, the impact of damage becomes obvious. This is due to the fact that bisphenols affect the potential of the effects of neurons, changing the transmission of signals through synapses.
The main focus of the study was given to the two largest nerve cells in the brain of fish – Mautner cells. They combine all sensory incentives, quickly launching the reaction of escape when predators approached.
Bisphenols are contained in food packaging, plastic dishes, bottles for drinking, toys, dental seals and children’s dolls.
