Germany: environmentalists again wanted to prevent construction of “Northern Flow-2”

In Germany, environmentalists from the environmental protection organization Deutsche Umwealthilfe again wanted to prevent the construction of the “Northern Flow-2” construction and appealed to the court of Hamburg demanding to abolish the permission previously issued by the regulator to lay the Russian gas pipeline in German waters. This is on Tuesday, April 13, reports TASS with reference to the press service of the organization.

“The lawsuit filed with the administrative court of Hamburg, aimed against the permission for construction work, which was previously issued … by the Federal Office for Shipping and Hydrography,” explained to Deutsche UmwellFe.

Initially, the regulator issued permission to build a gas pipeline on January 14, 2021. After that, Deutsche Umwellfe, together with another German environmental organization, the Union of Protection of Nature and Biodiversity (NABU) challenged this permission, thereby detaining the work in the exceptional economic zone of Germany.

On April 1, it became known that the Federal Office for Shipping and Hydrography FRG (BSH) rejected the demand of ecologists. The department stated that the concerns of environmental organizations regarding the fact that the construction of the gas pipeline allegedly harm the nesting birds, did not find confirmations.

The gas pipeline is already built by 95 percent, it remains to be laid about 121 kilometers (5 percent) of total length. Initially, it was assumed that the construction would end by the middle of 2020, then until the end of 2020, later – in the mid-2021, and, finally, in the fall of the 2021th.

The main problem of “Northern Flow-2” is the position of the United States, who consider it a geopolitical project aimed at dividing Europe and reduce European energy security.
