University’s scientists in the UK found that low fat diets reduce testosterone levels in men, which enhances the risk of cardiovascular diseases, diabetes and Alzheimer’s disease. This is reported in the article published in Journal of Steroid Biochemistry and Molecular Biology.
Researchers conducted a systematic review of scientific work with participation, a total of 206 people. Men first adhered to high fat diet (40 percent), and then they were transferred to food with a 20 percent fat content. It turned out that the testosterone level decreased by an average of 10-15 percent. Especially bad in this respect were vegetarian diet, causing a decrease in testosterone to 26 percent.
It is known that the high consumption of mono-saturated fats contained in olive oil, avocado and nuts can increase the production of testosterone. However, polyunsaturated omega-6 fats, which are mainly kept in vegetable oils, can cause damage to the cells producing testosterone.
Traditionally, dietary recommendations are focused on restricting fat consumption, and the current Rules of Great Britain and the United States limit fat consumption to a level of less than 35 percent of the total calorie. However, currently more and more research appears showing the benefits of high fat diets and low carbohydrate content.
