Bulgaria to send two Russian diplomats

The authorities of Bulgaria decided to send two Russian diplomats from the country. This decision was made against the background of a spy scandal. It is reported by RBC with reference to the BTV TV channel.

This is stated in the statement of the General Prosecutor of Bulgaria Ivan Gesheva.

On March 19, the Bulgarian Prosecutor’s Office reported that six employees of the Ministry of Defense of Bulgaria and military intelligence were detained on suspicion of espionage in favor of Russia.

In January, the prosecutor’s office of Bulgaria opened pre-trial investigations against two Russian diplomats in the case of espionage. It was established that from 2017 to the present one of them was engaged in spyware activities, collecting information about the electoral process in Bulgaria. It has been established that he has diplomatic immunity as the first secretary of the consular department of the Russian Embassy in Sofia.

It is noted that the second Russian from October 2018 to the present collected information, which is a state and official secret in the field of energy. He then sent her to the headquarters of the Russian intelligence service in Moscow.
