Tajikistan receives first batch of Covid-19 vaccine

The first batch of coronavirus vaccine from the Swedish-British company AstraZeneca arrived in Dushanbe on the night of March 9, Sputnik Tajikistan reports.

The republic received the drug under the international mechanism COVAX, the volume of its first tranche amounted to 192 thousand doses. All in all, Tajikistan will be able to claim 732 thousand doses of AstraZeneca, which will make it possible to vaccinate about 20 percent of the country’s population.

It is noted that the campaign to immunize citizens will begin in the republic in the coming days. First of all, the authorities expect to vaccinate doctors, military personnel and pensioners over 70 years old. The state intends to inoculate other groups of the population with other foreign-made drugs.

At the end of January 2021, President of Tajikistan Emomali Rahmon announced a complete victory over the spread of coronavirus in the country. Later, he ordered the opening of mosques, but kept some of the sanitary regulations in force. In total, according to official data, more than 13 thousand people have been infected with the infection since the beginning of the pandemic in the republic.
