Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova spoke about the role of women in international relations. Her words are quoted by RIA Novosti.
According to Zakharova, the time when diplomacy in Russia was a predominantly male profession has already passed. She said that there are many high posts in the Foreign Ministry occupied by women, and they no longer “have to fight for places” in the department.
The diplomat stressed that now professionalism in diplomacy is more important than gender. She herself judges her colleagues precisely by their abilities.
“A lot of women, especially if we talk about our Western partners, have some kind of additional agenda of their own to diplomatic work, to diplomatic efforts: they defend the rights of women, deal with gender issues. This is really typical for many. And when you work, then, first of all, professionalism is important … There are professionals, there are people who are experienced, less experienced, knowledgeable, broadening their horizons. This is the most important thing, this is the most important, “the Foreign Ministry spokesman said.
