Most of the billions of dollars that the US has invested in rebuilding infrastructure in Afghanistan have been wasted. This became known from the report of the state agency, which investigated the spending of the American state since 2008.
Over about 13 years, the United States has spent more than $ 7.8 billion on research areas. The buildings and vehicles purchased with this money were mostly abandoned or destroyed, according to the Special Inspectorate for the Reconstruction of Afghanistan (SIGAR).
The organization’s report says only $ 1.2 billion of the $ 7.8 billion have been appropriately spent, with buildings and transportation in good condition maintained at a total cost of only $ 343 million. The report’s findings indicate that government agencies that have allocated funds for projects in Afghanistan should be concerned about spending them.
In July 2020, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo announced that the United States plans to completely withdraw its troops from Afghanistan by May 2021. He stressed that the US Army has cut its military presence in the country by half.
The United States brought troops into Afghanistan after the September 11, 2001 terrorist attack in New York.
