Olympics Called US Chance for Talks with North Korea

The Tokyo Olympics will provide an opportunity for the resumption of talks between the US and North Korea. This was stated by South Korean President Moon Jae Inu, quoted by Reuters.

The South Korean leader also called the upcoming Summer Olympics a chance for dialogue between the two Koreas, as well as between Seoul and Tokyo. He expressed hope that the Games will allow Japan and South Korea to rebuild their economies, which have been hit hard by the coronavirus pandemic.

Earlier, US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken said that the administration of President Joe Biden will change its approach to interaction with North Korea and take a tougher position. According to Blinken, the American side, among other things, will consider the possibility of new sanctions against the DPRK, coordinated with allies.

At the end of March 2020, it was decided to postpone the Summer Olympics for one year due to the coronavirus pandemic. According to the plan, the games in Tokyo should now take place from July 23 to August 8, 2021. At the same time, more than 80 percent of the Japanese want to postpone or completely cancel the Olympics. The media have repeatedly reported on the Japanese government’s plans to cancel or re-postpone the event, but such intentions have never been officially confirmed.
