The Foreign Affairs Committee of the US House of Representatives adopted a resolution calling for new sanctions against Minsk. The recording of the committee meeting has been posted on its official YouTube channel.
The US Congress considers it necessary to take additional targeted measures against the Belarusian authorities and representatives of the election commission involved in falsifying the results of the presidential elections in August 2020. According to the resolution, the introduction of new sanctions should be coordinated with the European Union (EU), Great Britain, Canada and other US allies.
In addition, it is proposed to impose restrictions on the activities of a number of Belarusian state-owned companies. The authors also advocate the release of all those detained during the protests and the beginning of a dialogue between President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko and representatives of the opposition.
At the moment, the resolution is sent to the full composition of the House of Representatives. If adopted by the lower house of Congress, it will be considered in the Senate.
Earlier it was reported that the European Union extended the sanctions against Belarus for a year. It is clarified that restrictions against high-ranking Belarusian officials, as well as against companies and businessmen “benefiting from the regime” of President Alexander Lukashenko, will remain until February 28, 2022. The EU Council recalled that to date, 88 individuals and seven enterprises have been included in the sanctions list.
