The real growth in consumer prices in Russia in January 2021 compared to December 2020 turned out to be more than four times higher than the official statistics of Rosstat show. This is evidenced by the data of the research “Romir”.
Over the month, real inflation in the category of consumer goods (FMCG) increased by three percent, although Rosstat estimated it at 0.7 percent. Annual inflation in January, according to Romir’s estimates, was 11 percent, and according to Rosstat’s estimates – 5.2 percent. Compared to January 2019, consumer goods rose 18 percent.
Usually, inflation slows down at the beginning of the year, but in 2021 analysts observed the opposite situation, the organization noted. The reason was that due to the pandemic, more people did not go on vacation, stayed for the New Year holidays in their cities, where they spent more money.
Earlier, FinExpertiza provided data on real inflation that were different from Rosstat. The cost of food products in Russia in January 2021 increased by seven percent compared to January last. Growth has been a record since January 2016, that is, in five years.
