The German partner of Gazprom for the construction of Nord Stream 2, Wintershall Dea, promised to provide 950 million euros for the project, but was limited to only 730 million. This was stated by Thilo Wieland, a member of the board of the company responsible for gas transportation projects, activities in Russia and Latin America, reports RIA Novosti.
According to him, Wintershall Dea was ready to continue financing, but the construction operator Nord Stream 2 AG refused the money. “The organization has informed us that these funds are sufficient,” Wieland explained.
Speaking at a round table organized by the company, the top manager did not begin to guess when the construction would end. Nevertheless, he expressed confidence that the project will someday work.
Earlier, Wintershall Dea announced that it would no longer invest in Nord Stream 2. The company clarified that the last payment was made later than the new US sanctions came into effect. Prior to that, other foreign partners of Gazprom also reported on the completion of the investment.
The construction of Nord Stream 2 was frozen in December 2019 after the sanctions from Washington. In February 2021, the Fortuna barge resumed laying pipes in Danish waters.
The work on this section is scheduled to be completed in April, and the entire gas pipeline will be completed by the end of the year. Certification and insurance of the route remain unsolved problems. At least 18 European companies have refused to cooperate with Nord Stream 2 AG.
