The candidate for the post of the head of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), William Burns, has named the United States’ largest geopolitical rival. In his opinion, this rival is China. This is stated in a document published on the website of the special intelligence committee of the US Senate.
He stressed that competition with Beijing will be the task of a decade for Washington. “Today’s environment [in the world] is becoming more complex and competitive. It is a world in which familiar threats persist – from terrorism and nuclear proliferation to an aggressive Russia, provocative North Korea and hostile Iran. But it is also a world of new challenges in which change climate and global health insecurity are taking a heavy toll on the American people, in which cyber threats pose an increasing threat to our societies and in which a hostile, predatory Chinese leadership represents the largest geopolitical test, ”Burns said.
He also recalled the words of US President Joe Biden that “winning the competition over China will be a key [challenge for American] national security in the coming decades.”
Burns was previously nominated by the incumbent head of the White House.
Earlier it became known that the United States and Canada have teamed up to confront China. “This includes coordinating our approaches to better compete with China and better protect our values,” Biden said.
