The United States is going to be elected to the UN Human Rights Council (HRC) for 2022-2024. This was stated by the US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken, reports Reuters.
“We humbly ask other UN member states to support our return request,” he said.
In October, Russia was elected a member of the UN Human Rights Council for three years. 158 states voted for this decision. Mike Pompeo, then US Secretary of State, criticized the decision and said that it confirms the correctness of the American move in 2018.
US officials announced the country’s withdrawal from the HRC in 2018. The administration of former US President Donald Trump has repeatedly criticized the Council for its “biased” attitude towards Israel and for the membership of Venezuela, China and Cuba.
