German partner of Nord Stream 2 explained future of project

The German partner of Gazprom for the construction of Nord Stream 2, Wintershall Dea, spoke about the future of the project. The company is confident that the construction of the gas pipeline will be completed, since Europe needs it when its own production is reduced, TASS writes with reference to the statement of the head of the company, Mario Meren.

“It [Nord Stream 2] is very necessary [to Europe], because the rate of its own gas production is declining. We need gas imports,” the top manager said. Mehren noted that fuel is needed both to maintain a reliable energy supply to Europe in winter, when the occupancy of underground gas storage facilities (UGS) falls below 35 percent, and as part of sustainable development in Europe.

Earlier Wintershall Dea announced the completion of investment in the project. Over the years of cooperation, the company has spent a total of $ 730 million. The loan payments were completed before the revision of the US sanctions law, which means they do not fall under it, the organization noted.

Previously, it was reported that at least 18 European companies withdrew from the pipeline project after the threat of US sanctions. The State Department praised the effectiveness of such a strategy by Washington to counter the completion of Nord Stream 2.
