US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken expressed concern over Egypt’s purchase of Su-35 fighters from Russia. The corresponding message is posted on the website of the Department of State.
Blinken had a phone call with his Egyptian counterpart Sameh Shukri on Tuesday 23 February. During the conversation, the diplomats also discussed the importance of partnership in the fight against terrorism and recent developments in the region.
The head of the American Foreign Office stressed that the human rights situation in Egypt “will occupy a central place” in relations between the two countries. Other details of the conversation were not disclosed.
In March 2019, Kommersant, citing sources, said that Russia and Egypt had signed an agreement on the supply of Su-35 fighters to Egypt for two billion dollars. Subsequently, the United States has repeatedly put pressure on Egypt in connection with the proposed purchase and demanded to abandon it.
The Su-35 is a 4 ++ generation multifunctional fighter. The last combat aircraft built on the basis of the T-10S platform, which became the basis for the Su-27 / Su-30 fighters and their modifications.
