Texas covered food crisis due to severe frosts

The American state of Texas has covered the food crisis amid the worst frost in several decades that struck the region in February 2021, and subsequent power outages. Bloomberg reports.

Due to the closure of outlets, many stores are forced to throw away perishable food that has expired soon and have difficulty in supplying new food. Locals share with each other tips on where to buy milk or bottled water. A similar situation has developed in the catering sector, where establishments that are closed due to frost are also forced to get rid of food. In the cold weather, not only “traditional” cafes and restaurants are facing food problems, but also online food ordering and delivery platforms such as UberEats.

According to the agency, in many areas, store shelves remain empty due to problems with the delivery of goods. In Houston supermarkets, where shelves were full on Friday morning, February 19, queues lined up from 04:00 am local time. As a result, there is no bread, milk, cheese, poultry, hot food or bottled water left at the outlets by lunchtime.

Texas, the largest US state, faced its worst frost in more than 30 years in February 2021. In the region, oil and gas production declined, as well as an energy and transport collapse. Millions of Texans were left without electricity and heating.
