North Korean hackers launch about 1.6 million attacks on South Korea in a day

North Korean hackers carried out about 1.6 million attacks per day for money. This is reported by Nikkei Asia, citing sources.

The attacks are recorded by the security forces of South Korea. Hackers from the DPRK were convicted of extortion of hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Small and medium-sized companies in South Korea are the main targets of attacks. Sometimes attackers threaten to disclose confidential information, such as customer data and information about future transactions, in exchange for a ransom in bitcoins. Its amount ranges from 40 to 470 thousand dollars.

Nikkei Asia notes that the total damage from hacker actions was almost $ 1.8 billion in 2020. Over the past five years, the amount of damage from attacks from North Korea has increased 18 times.

On February 16, hackers from North Korea were caught in the attack on Pfizer. Whether the hackers managed to gain access to any information is not disclosed.
