US investigates cover-up deaths due to coronavirus

The United States is investigating a possible concealment of deaths due to coronavirus by the authorities of the state of New York. ABC News reported about it.

The FBI and the Brooklyn New York District Attorney’s Office will investigate. State Governor Andrew Cuomo was suspected of deliberately hiding the true death toll of COVID-19 in New York nursing homes in the spring and summer of 2020. ABC recalls that the administration reported about 8.7 thousand deaths in these institutions, but this figure could be deliberately underestimated by half.

It is noted that subpoenas for testimony have already been sent to employees of the governor’s administration involved in working with statistics of coronavirus infections. Special attention will be paid to reporting on deaths in nursing homes.

On February 16, Cuomo admitted that the efforts of the authorities might not have been enough, which created a vacuum that “political opponents took advantage of.” The Governor stressed that he is taking responsibility for what happened.

In early February, a number of state legislators – mostly Republicans – demanded Cuomo’s resignation. They suspected his malicious intent after learning that the governor’s office did not provide real data on mortality in nursing homes. Public information was given with a noticeable understatement.
