Norilsk Nickel promised to pay a fine for an accident at a thermal power plant

The Norilsk Nickel company agreed to pay the fine after the accident at the thermal power station. This was announced by the senior vice president of the company for sustainable development Andrey Bugrov, quoted by RBC.

“There is a court decision, we will make this payment, it goes to the federal budget,” he said. Financial Director of the company Sergey Malyshev, in turn, added that the payment will be due to a reduction in profits and a decrease in dividends.

Earlier in February, the Arbitration Court of the Krasnoyarsk Territory partially satisfied the claim of Rosprirodnadzor against the subsidiary of Norilsk Nickel, the Norilsk-Taimyr Energy Company (NTEK), and ordered to recover from the company a record 146,177 million rubles.

Later it became known that part of the amount that Norilsk Nickel will pay to the federal budget will go to targeted programs run by the Ministry of Natural Resources. However, it is not known exactly what purposes this money will be spent on.

At the end of May 2020, an oil spill was recorded at TPP-3 in Norilsk. As a result of the depressurization of the tank, 20 thousand cubic meters of diesel fuel spilled out of it. The cause of the accident was called the subsidence of the piles due to the melting of the permafrost. Rosprirodnadzor estimated the damage at 147 billion rubles for water bodies and almost 739 million rubles for soil. Norilsk Nickel did not agree with this assessment, the company was ready to give only 21.4 billion rubles.
