A man fled from North Korea to South Korea in an unusual way. He crossed the maritime border between the two countries in a diving suit, South Korean news agency Yonghap reports, citing the country’s Joint Chiefs of Staff.
The fugitive was noticed in the border town of Koson with the help of CCTV cameras, but they managed to catch him only three hours later. It is reported that the man was able to crawl through the drainage tunnel, thereby passing the barbed wire along the coast. The military admitted that the tunnel was not equipped with special protection against penetration.
It is specified that the man is between 20 and 30 years old. He stated that he is a civilian and fled North Korea, but the proceedings are ongoing. The military is conducting an inspection, following which security measures at the border may be strengthened.
On the eve it became known that North Korea has toughened the maximum penalty for the import and distribution of South Korean video materials. Now the death penalty can be threatened for this. The maximum prison sentence for watching videos from South Korea was also increased from 5 to 15 years. It was noted that the purpose of the relevant law, most likely, is to completely prevent the penetration of “anti-socialist” propaganda into North Korea.
