Former US President Donald Trump spoke sharply against the Republican leader in the Senate, Mitch McConnell. RIA Novosti informs about it with reference to the written statement of the past head of state.
On the eve of McConnell announced Trump’s “political and moral responsibility” for everything done as head of state. In particular, he blamed Trump for the storming of the Capitol by his supporters on January 6.
“The GOP can never be respected and strong with political ‘leaders’ like Senator Mitch McConnell,” Trump replied. According to him, the Republicans lost their majority in the Senate precisely because of the lack of that “political intuition, wisdom, skill and personal qualities.”
Trump also recalled that McConnell “begged” him to support his candidacy in the 2020 elections, and expressed regret that he contributed to his re-election. “How quickly McConnell forgets everything,” he lamented.
On February 13, 57 senators voted to impeach Trump, this number was not enough to issue an indictment, and the Senate acquitted the former president. McConnell was among the opponents of Trump’s removal.
The second impeachment trial against Trump began in the Senate on February 9. On January 14, the House of Representatives voted to impeach the 45th President over the riots in Washington. This is the first time the US has attempted to remove a former president from office after the end of his term.
The storming of the Capitol in the United States took place on January 6 during a rally of supporters of the current head of state, who do not recognize the results of the November vote, which resulted in Biden being elected president. The rallies led to clashes with the police. Five people were killed, dozens were detained. The Democrats accused the president of inciting mutiny, which was the reason for the impeachment proceedings.
