White House spokesman Jen Psaki commented on the possibility of imposing further sanctions over the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline. RIA Novosti reports.
According to her, the United States continues to monitor the completion of its construction or certification of the gas pipeline. Psaki stressed that if such actions take place, then the United States will decide on the imposition of sanctions. At the same time, she noted that sanctions are only one of the tools to ensure energy security.
A White House spokeswoman also said that US President Joe Biden still considers Nord Stream 2 a bad deal for Europe. She added that, according to the head of state, the implementation of this project can divide Europe.
Earlier, The Wall Street Journal reported that the Biden administration was thinking about revising the policy on Nord Stream 2. According to the American newspaper, Washington is evaluating whether it is necessary to abandon sanctions against companies and individuals involved in the construction.
Currently, the construction of Nord Stream 2 has not been completed; a section of the gas pipeline is being laid in the territorial waters of Denmark. Work in the waters of the kingdom is scheduled to be completed in April 2021. In general, Gazprom expects that the gas pipeline will be completed by the end of this year.
