Treating coronavirus with vitamin C and zinc is ineffective and can harm the body. This therapy does not shorten the duration of illness, as proven in a scientific article published in the JAMA Network Open.
Scientists conducted an experiment in which 214 experimental subjects were divided into four groups. Three of them received these supplements individually or together, and the fourth received routine care, including rest and antipyretic drugs.
“High doses of zinc gluconate, ascorbic acid (vitamin C), or both supplements did not reduce the symptoms of SARS-CoV-2,” said Cleveland Clinic cardiologist Dr. Milind Desai and the Cleveland Clinic team. At the same time, in the groups that received the supplements, a number of side effects from too large doses of drugs were recorded. These include nausea, diarrhea and stomach cramps.
As noted by CNN, taking zinc in the first day after the detection of cold symptoms helps to reduce the time of illness by only one day. Moreover, the daily intake of vitamin C should not exceed 75 milligrams for women and 90 for men.
Earlier it was reported that the cause of the mutation of the coronavirus was found in one of the methods of its treatment – plasma transfusion of patients who had been ill. In addition, chronic infections or weak immunity contribute to changes in the virus.
