In the capillaries of patients who died with coronavirus, American doctors found many microthrombi, due to which the brain was not sufficiently saturated with oxygen, according to the scientific journal JAMA Neurology.
It is noted that we are talking about five elderly patients who suffered from impaired consciousness, loss of consciousness and other negative effects of COVID-19 on the brain. “In their capillaries there were traces of chronic lack of oxygen and many megakaryocytes – cells that are responsible for the production of ‘building materials’ for blood clots,” the article says.
Scientists cannot yet answer where these cells came from in the vessels. According to the researchers, the penetration of megakaryocytes into the capillaries of the brain is associated with the coronavirus.
Associate Professor at Johns Hopkins University (USA) David Nauen and his colleagues believe that the infection affects the work of vascular cells, which is why they begin to produce signaling substances that provoke the formation of blood clots. To confirm this hypothesis, scientists will analyze new tissue samples of blood vessels and brain.
Previously it was reported that researchers have found a link between incurable Alzheimer’s disease and severe COVID-19. It turned out that the ApoE4 gene, which increases the risk of blue dementia, also increases a person’s susceptibility to coronavirus.
