Soviet Volga will continue to defend Russia and Belarus from US missiles

The Soviet radar station (radar) “Volga”, located at the Russian base in Belarus, may again become relevant. This was announced on the air of the Zvezda TV channel by the head of the main missile attack warning center of the Russian Aerospace Forces Andrei Revenok, reports TASS.

The radar will continue to protect Belarus and Russia from US missiles in the event that American missile defense (ABM) systems are still deployed in Europe. Revenok emphasized that such systems perform not only the functions of protection against attacks, but can themselves be a means of striking.

Now the Russian station is on alert and “performs its task in the established review sector,” said the representative of the Aerospace Forces.

The Volga radar is part of the Russian missile attack warning system, which also applies to Belarus under the Treaty on the Union State. The object, located in the area of the Belarusian city of Baranovichi, is part of the Russian Aerospace Forces structure. It was created in the 1980s in response to the deployment of American Pershing-2 missiles in the Federal Republic of Germany.

“Volga” controls the territories of Western Europe, patrol areas of NATO submarines in the Norwegian Sea and in the North Atlantic Ocean. The station can detect ballistic missiles in flight, can identify space objects and track their trajectory from launch to impact point.
