Microsoft founder Bill Gates plans to invest about two billion dollars over five years in the fight against climate change, writes Handelsblatt.
In his opinion, the climate catastrophe can be prevented with the help of innovative technologies. To do this, Gates will give money to startups and other projects that offer solutions to combat climate change.
The billionaire also called for a five-fold increase in global public investment in research (to at least $ 110 billion a year). They should be directed towards the development of renewable energy sources and other innovations, the founder of Microsoft Corporation believes.
Earlier, Gates compared the effects of air pollution and the coronavirus pandemic, saying that they are equally devastating. The billionaire predicted a climate catastrophe in the coming decades. To avoid a catastrophe, the businessman proposes to radically reduce the amount of greenhouse gas emissions into the atmosphere.
Gates is confident that in the event of environmental degradation, human death and economic problems will haunt humanity longer than the COVID-19 pandemic. According to him, within 40 years, mortality from rising temperatures on the planet will be compared with mortality from coronavirus – about 14 deaths per 100 thousand people.
