US Senators, Republican Jim Risch and Democrat Jane Sheikhin, have called on President Joe Biden to impose sanctions against the Russian Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline. Bloomberg reports.
Politicians stressed that the relationship between the United States and Germany is “the cornerstone of the transatlantic alliance.” “But allowing the completion of Nord Stream 2 does not imply a constructive path to this partnership,” the senators wrote.
It is also indicated that they urged Biden to provide a report on this issue and related companies by February 16.
Earlier it became known that Germany and the United States are negotiating the lifting of sanctions from the Nord Stream-2 gas pipeline. A likely and pragmatic solution may be the adoption of the plan of the German side. Back in August 2020, the German Ministry of Finance sent a proposal to Washington, according to which Berlin is ready to allocate a billion euros for the construction of two terminals for receiving American liquefied natural gas (LNG) in exchange for lifting US sanctions on Nord Stream 2.
Currently, the construction of the facility is not completed; a section of the gas pipeline is being laid in the territorial waters of Denmark. Work on the territory of the kingdom is planned to be completed in April 2021. In general, Gazprom expects that Nord Stream 2 will be completed by the end of this year.
