Germany and the US are in talks to lift sanctions from the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline, but the outcome of the talks is difficult to predict. RIA Novosti was informed about this by a source familiar with the discussion.
According to the interlocutor of the agency, the adoption of the plan of the German side may become a probable and pragmatic decision. Back in August 2020, the German Ministry of Finance sent a proposal to Washington, according to which Berlin is ready to allocate a billion euros for the construction of two terminals for receiving American liquefied natural gas (LNG) in exchange for lifting US sanctions on Nord Stream 2.
Spiegel magazine also said that Europe and the United States are discussing a “strategic package” on the Russian gas pipeline that could satisfy Washington. Among the proposals is the ability to automatically turn off gas supplies through Nord Stream 2 if Russia is found to be in violation of human rights or international law.
