It is impossible to forge 80 percent of the votes in the presidential elections, said the head of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko, commenting on the accusations of fabricating the voting results. His words are quoted by RIA Novosti.
“Well, you know, frankly, well, our governors have a habit of showing who is better. And someone could add half a percent, one percent, two. But listen, well, you can’t draw 80 percent,” the president said.
He added that “if someone doesn’t like 80 percent,” let it be 76 or 68, “like the average for the questionnaires.” “But all the same we are the winners, behind us is the overwhelming majority of the people,” Lukashenka stressed at the All-Belarusian People’s Assembly. The delegates greeted these words with applause.
Earlier on February 11, Lukashenko said that Belarus is experiencing a turning point in its history, and compared the current situation with the collapse of the USSR and its consequences. “The only difference is that then there was complete hopelessness. There was no country, there was nothing at all. A turning point, chaos in the minds of people,” he said.
The presidential elections in Belarus were held on August 9, 2020. The CEC announced that Lukashenko, who has ruled the country since 1994, won 80 percent of the vote. This caused massive protests that have been going on for six months. Lukashenko assures that the West is behind them.
