Belarus denies rumors of a new loan from Russia

The Ministry of Finance of Belarus denied rumors about a request from Russia for a loan of $ 3 billion at the expense of the remaining funds of a previously provided loan for the construction of the BelNPP. This was reported by the press secretary of the Belarusian department Iryna Komar, Interfax reports.

“We are working under previously defined agreements and have not requested early receipt of funds. We do not confirm the information,” she said.

Earlier on Thursday, February 11, the press secretary of the Russian president Dmitry Peskov spoke about the upcoming meeting of the leaders of Russia and Belarus. According to him, its agenda is still being formed. However, the Kommersant newspaper reported that at a meeting in February, Lukashenko will ask Putin for the right to spend the funds left over from the construction of the Belarusian nuclear power plant.

Earlier it was reported that Russia will provide Belarus with a loan of $ 1.5 billion. Moreover, part of the allocated funds will go to repay previous loans from Russia. In early February 2021, the Minister of Finance of the Republic, Yuri Seliverstov, announced that Minsk expects to receive the second tranche of a loan of $ 500 million from Russia in the first half of this year. The first tranche of the loan in the amount of $ 500 million was received by the Belarusian Ministry of Finance on December 30, 2020.
