The Austrian authorities said that the largest hotbed of the South African strain of coronavirus in Europe has emerged in the Alpine Tyrol. The Associated Press reports.
According to Austrian Chancellor Sebastian Kurz, 293 cases of infection with this variant of the virus have been detected in Tyrol. More than 120 of them are currently active.
The authorities said that people will be able to leave the alpine region only after presenting a negative coronavirus test. You will also need it in order to use the cable cars and ski lifts in the ski resorts.
A new and more contagious strain of coronavirus was discovered in South Africa on December 18. Later it became known that the AstraZeneca coronavirus vaccine was ineffective against a new type of virus. South African authorities have suspended the implementation of a plan to vaccinate the population with a drug from an Anglo-Swedish pharmaceutical company.
